| Radiohead are that rare thing: a
band that has maintained is artistic freedom over
the years, despite being signed to a major label
– and a band that has constantly developed.

| Music is changing. In fact, the
music industry is changing; it is changing even
faster than it realises. Major record labels are
often up to speed on latest developments, but
it is indie music that leads the way in the music
world - and everyone else seems to follow. Indeed,
with the online music revolution taking place
right now, being signed to a major record label
is less and less important. However, having your
own record label can be more and more beneficial. |

Getting
yourself known is one of the hardest aspects
of being in a band. As Radiohead once
said, anyone can play guitar, and if you
watch Pop Idol and other such programs,
anyone believes they can sing. But not
everyone can take it that step further
and organise their own concert. It takes
a lot of work, a lot of convincing, and
organising a music event takes a lot of
time too. Here’s Blue Beam’s
step-by-step guide to gigging. |

In
an industry where only a fraction of the talent
finds success, it’s not hard to see that
there’s more to making it than making
good music. It can take years to get a record
deal, even if you’re good. So many musicians
make the mistake of putting all their stock
into outdated marketing strategies and dead-end
demos. They end up blending in with the rest;
their demos and their press kits end up in the
trash. There’s no reason to wait for a
suit to tell you it’s your time. The music
industry is moving out of the traditional brick
and mortar and into the digital realm; indie
artists are finding more and more ways to get
there music out of their garages and into your
iPod. Emerging artists looking for play time
will get their name out there not by sending
out hundreds of demos, but by getting their
face and name on the web, getting their music
played for the people who will listen, and building
up a following. Record companies can’t
ignore a well established fan base. |
